Is GiphyFy free?
Yes — GiphyFy is free to use, with no account and no paywall. If you enjoy it and want to support development, you can donate on Ko-fi, but that's entirely optional.
Do I need to set anything up?
No. There are no dashboards, configuration screens or permissions to juggle. Add GiphyFy to your account or server and you can start right-clicking messages or using slash commands immediately.
How do I add GiphyFy?
You can install it two ways: as a User App for just yourself, or to a whole server. Both use Discord's standard "Add App" flow. Our add-to-Discord guide walks through both.
Does GiphyFy work in DMs?
Yes. Installed as a User App, GiphyFy works almost everywhere on Discord — including direct messages and group chats, and even in servers where it isn't installed.
How do I screenshot a message?
Right-click the message (or long-press on mobile), open Apps and choose 📸 Screenshot GIF. You can also reply to a message and mention @GiphyFy, or use /screenshot with a message ID. Full walkthrough: turn a message into a GIF.
02 Files & formats
What file types can I convert to a GIF?
Images: PNG, JPG and WEBP. Videos: MP4, WEBM and MOV (AVI and MKV work too). Upload one with the /giphyfy command.
Is there a file size limit?
Videos uploaded to /giphyfy must be 15 MB or smaller, and the GIF GiphyFy produces is capped at Discord's 25 MB limit. If a GIF comes out too big, see how to shrink it.
Can I convert long videos?
GiphyFy uses up to 15 seconds from the start of a video (5 by default, set with max_duration). For longer clips, trim them first or convert the section you want.
Can I embed YouTube videos?
Not yet. The /embed command currently supports TikTok and Instagram videos, with YouTube support planned. See the embed guide.
03 Quality & troubleshooting
Why is my GIF too large to send?
GIF size grows with frame rate, length and detail. Lower the fps (try 8 or 6), reduce max_duration to a few seconds, and use Sharp quality for flat graphics. Step-by-step: shrink a GIF under Discord's limit.
Why does my GIF look blurry or washed out?
The default High quality uses dithering for smooth gradients, which can soften text and pixel art. Switch quality to Sharp for crisp edges on logos, screenshots and pixel art. More in best settings for quality.
What's the difference between High and Sharp quality?
High blends colours with dithering — great for photos and gradients. Sharp turns dithering off for clean, hard edges — great for text, logos and pixel art. They can also affect file size.
Should I use a GIF or a video for Discord?
GIFs autoplay and loop silently, which is perfect for reactions and memes. Video (MP4/WEBM) is far smaller for anything long or with sound. We compare them in GIF vs WebM vs MP4 for Discord.
04 Privacy & safety
Does GiphyFy store my messages or files?
No. Content is processed in memory or temporary files and deleted as soon as the GIF is generated. GiphyFy doesn't keep copies of your GIFs or build profiles of you. Read the full Privacy Policy.
Is GiphyFy safe and moderated?
Yes. GiphyFy runs an automated safety system that detects, blocks and reports illegal content — in particular CSAM and non-consensual sexual content. See Trust & Safety for how it works.
Who can delete a GIF GiphyFy creates?
Every GIF includes a 🗑️ Delete button that only the person who generated it, or the author of the original message, can use.
